THE Port Elizabeth Labour Court has reserved judgment in an urgent application filed by a union in its bid to stop police officers with criminal records being fired.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) is acting on behalf of three officers, but the outcome of the case could affect more than 1000 SAPS members in the province

The action follows Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and police commissioner Riah Phiyega having introduced a process of holding boards of inquiry countrywide.

The union says the court should provide interim relief pending a review of the entire process as "the boards have been conducting themselves in an unfair and unprocedural manner". -
