FOUR bank robbers are on the run after they managed to give police the slip on the road between Jansenville and Uitenhage.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Wessel Cronjé said a group of five robbers held employees of a bank in Jansenville at gunpoint on Wednesday after gaining access through the roof.

They threatened the bank's manager until she opened a safe and ATM. The suspects then fled with an estimated R300000.

Police were alerted and they set off after the vehicle. About 30km outside Jansenville, the robbers' vehicle broke down, with police officers behind them.

The five men fled, but one, a 42-year-old, was caught. Officers recovered R136000 from the suspect and the vehicle. – Riaan Marais
