A PAEDIATRIC surgeon who performed reconstructive surgery on a sixyear-old girl who was brutally raped in 2011 told the Port Elizabeth High Court that the girl was likely to have health problems as a result of her injuries for the rest of her life.

Dr Carla van Rensburg, a specialist surgeon at the East London Hospital Complex, said the girl, who is now eight, has had to endure a series of operations.

Xolile Tose, 33, of KwaNoxolo, is charged with raping the girl who lives in Motherwell.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Van Rensburg said the girl was referred to East London on January 4 2012 to undergo the reconstructive surgery because there was no one available in Port Elizabeth.

The operation was conducted on January 9 in East London.

The trial continues today. - Lee-Anne Butler
