A TOTAL of 503 international temporary teachers could lose their jobs in the Eastern Cape.

An Education Department report said they were among temporary staff who might be employed if they qualified for their jobs. This is in line with a deal brokered between the department and teacher unions last month. The agreement is being monitored by the Education Labour Relations Council.

Last week Cindy Foca, secretary-general of the ELRC, said the teachers would have to verify their qualifications with the South African Qualifications Authority (Saqa). This was confirmed by Saqa chief executive Joe Samuels, who said verifications should have been done before a teacher arrived in South Africa.
