A BREAKTHROUGH agreement that up to 90% of eligible temporary teachers now have permanent jobs has been reached between the Eastern Cape Education Department and teacher unions.

The agreement, which was announced in East London yesterday, also stipulates that teachers who are additional to requirements will be transferred to schools where they are required.

The agreement comes after years of union labour unrest in which many teachers downed tools to protest against their temporary status, and other grievances.
