A SUNDAY picnic at The Cove on the Kromme River in St Francis Bay turned into a tragedy on Sunday when Robin Smith, 33, lost his life trying to rescue two of his children who had become stranded on the opposite bank by the incoming tide.
An NSRI spokesman confirmed that they were called to assist to bring two children to safety. As no boat was available, a NSRI swimmer was sent out to the children while a nearby fishing boat was summoned to assist in bringing the victims to safety. It was then established that a third victim was missing and thought to have drowned while attempting to cross the river. A search took place with NSRI members wading up river with the tide and the fishing boat again responding to the appeal for assistance to search from further up the river.

THE Jeffreys Bay police received a warning from a watchdog in Port Elizabeth about card cloning in progress at the Absa ATM in Jeffreys Bay. The police caught the perpetrator with the cloned card and stolen cash. The complainant, a tourist from Germany, declined to make a case and the police had to let the suspect go. According to W/O Petra Els, members of the public should be aware that perpetrators install a device into the ATM which holds your card for a certain time. Do not leave the ATM until you have phoned to cancel your card or received your card back. Do not accept help from anyone at the ATM.
BANKS have warned that SMSs received from a number similar to the one that you get bank notifications from are fraudulent. The SMS will indicate a problem on your account and a "consultant” will contact you. When the "consultant” contacts you he/she will start confirming your details: Account number and then ask what kind of phone you are using. The fraudsters will then contact your cellphone provider and perform a SIM Swap. This enables the fraudsters to receive OTP'S (one time pins) and/or RVN's (random verification numbers) from your bank and this also gives them access to your bank accounts. By the time you realise that your cell number is not working your money will be out of your account.
