THE Eastern Province Surfing Council (EPSC) hosted the first of three trials at Kitchen Windows in Jeffreys Bay on Saturday, June 23.
"These are part of a series of trials to select the EP Junior surfing team for the SA Junior Surfing championships,” said Etienne Venter from the EPSC.
He said the triails will be held in Jeffreys Bay at the begging beginning of October in.
"There are three age divisions for boys and girls – u-13, u-15 and u-17.
"Braving freezing cold conditions and a strong offshore wind this past weekend 33 surfers from Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay competed in two- and three-foot waves,” said Venter.
"Despite the cold, the surfing was red hot and from the first heat the youngsters in the u-13 boys set the pace.”
He said a total of 20 heats were run and in every heat the surfers pushed each other hard to bring out the best in one another.anthers surfing.
"An indicator of the high standard of surfing was that the division winners' scores which were ng waves were all in the excellent range, 8.0 to 9.5 out of 10,” said Venter.
