IN A shock move yesterday, a Somali shopkeeper arrested at the weekend for allegedly shooting dead a Port Elizabeth teenager was released from custody due to lack of evidence. The family man, 40, who has not been named for safety reasons, was brought from St Albans Prison to the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court where he was meant to appear, but was told instead he was free to go.
The shooting of Lunje Ntongana, 19, sparked violence and looting in New Brighton on Sunday, which has since spread to 13 other areas including Motherwell, Kwazakhele, Bethelsdorp, Missionvale, Veeplaas, Swartkops, Kamvelihle and KwaDwesi.
More than 500 Somali shops have been looted in the past three days and at least 70 people arrested for public violence. The terrified Somalis are now holed up in Korsten with the few possessions they managed to salvage.
Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Ben Fihla said yesterday he was disgusted by the chaos in the townships and the "acts of criminality seen across the city".
