A WOMAN has been cured of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) in what has been described as a major breakthrough for the treatment of such patients.


The drugs, however, come at a steep price, with about R493000 needed for the two-year course of antibiotics per patient at private sector prices.


Following the breakthrough, Doctors without Borders (MSF) has urged the South African Department of Health to pursue options for sourcing more affordable, quality- assured generics of the antibiotic Linezolid.
