LOCAL arts production company Dance Space Productions is pulling out all the stops ahead of the vibrant night of song and dance it will be hosting at the Settlers Park Primary School hall in Walmer this weekend.
The event will take the form of a talent show initiated to create much-needed opportunities for youngsters from all communities in the Bay to perform on stage.
It will start at 7pm on Saturday and feature performances from both individuals and groups short-listed during talent scout auditions held in areas such as Motherwell, Missionvale, New Brighton, Walmer and Gelvandale earlier this year.
Dance Space Productions event manager Charmaine Allison, who is also a singer, said more than 40 contestants, aged 13 years and up, would compete in either the dance or singing category.
She said the show would be a "family friendly" variety concert, with entry of R130 including a three-course meal and entry into a lucky draw.
"This is a unique idea and a first for the Bay," Allison, who is also the mum of 2010 Idols runner-up Melissa Allison, said.
More talent searches would follow during the course of the year, she added.
Conceptualised last year, when several talent searches were also held, the competition was to redress "the overwhelming lack of opportunity" in the Bay's arts fraternity.
She said there was a need to host a show that would include individuals and groups from previously "bypassed Bay areas".
"We have local talent that seldom if ever gets preparation that can enable them to compete in big competitions such as Idols and SA's Got Talent."
After the performances the audience will get to vote for their favourite acts.
Cash prizes are up for grabs, with winners and runners-up standing a chance to walk away with R1500.
Dance Space Productions produced a variety of local shows and events so musicians and dancers could showcase their talents, Allison said.
Talent competitions of this nature also promoted excellence, she added.
The company also makes room for juggling acts, flame throwing, acrobatics, tumbling, trampoline performers.
"This is a growing annual concept and benefits our young up-and-coming artists from all spheres and walks of life. It is an ongoing project for the community, showcasing local acts on levels they have never been on," Allison said.
A cash bar, social dancing and music from Allison and Justin Engelbrecht will take the function into the night.
