Madibaz want flying start

NMMU ready to take on Pukke as last-four dash begins

The new-look Madibaz set off in what is expected to be a frantic race to reach the semifinals of the Varsity Cup when they face archrivals Pukke in Potchefstroom tonight. Coach David Maidza says he has no intention of being left behind at the start in what will be a compacted dash to make the last four.

“It could be an open season this year so it’s important we do not get left behind early in the season.

“It is about each game each week and making sure you stay in the hunt or in the front and not to worry about anything else that happens behind you. We owe it to ourselves to have a good start,” he said.

After the heartbreak of being knocked out at the semifinal stage for the past two seasons, Maidza has spoken of his burning ambition to go all the way this year.

“Pukke, with the type of squad they have, will be one of the leading contenders in the competition.

“It will be a good test for the young squad I have got,” he said.
