Gogos on the go to get fit

Exercise first, community projects follow

Every morning at 6.30am a group of gogos in Kwazakhele are up and about walking the streets with the dual purpose of keeping fit and improving their community.

The group of 25 elderly women have seen significant health benefits – so much so that they are now full of energy and spend their time warning children of the dangers of drugs and crime.

Phathiswa Nonqotho, 62, said the group ranged in age from 53 to 84. The group is called Amazing Elderly Development (Landezwa Luvuno).

“A lot of us were suffering from old people’s sicknesses. We started by walking everyday from 6.30am to 8.30am.

“It was difficult at first, but our bodies got used to the schedule.

“When I started I had a light stroke, but now I am fit and feel even younger,” Nonqotho said.

She said the invigorated women then decided to turn their attention to the youngsters they saw milling around in the streets.
