Pefa league contenders register easy victories

THE two-way race in the Pefa premier soccer league continued at the weekend as both contenders scored resounding victories.

Log-leaders Callies continued from where they left off in the first round when they thrashed Warriors 8-1 in Londt Park on Friday. In the first round, they won 7-1.

Kurt Petersen led the onslaught with a hat-trick for Callies, who led 4-0 at the break. Top goalscorer Shenniel Benn (2), Orenthal Jordaan, Emmanuel Hendricks and Razeen Saffodein completed the rout.

It also rained goals at the NMMU south campus when the students, who beat PE Homerovers 6-1 in a League Cup quarterfinal last week, repeated the performance when they won 5-1.

Young Sachin Jackson continued his good form that saw him break into the starting 11 of the Varsity Football Challenge side by scoring two goals in quick succession to put the Madibaz 2-0 up at the break.

In the second half, Lukanyo Rasmeni netted a hat-trick before Homerovers pulled one back via a penalty.

The students trail Callies by three points but have two matches in hand.

Madibaz Reserves did even better than their senior team in the curtain-raiser when they thrashed Homerovers 6-0.

After Lukhanyo Ndabeta opened the scoring midway into the first half, Warren Kops added the second before half time.

In the second half, Bongani Zono, Florian Braksien, Reginald Mabokane and Litha Fingo added the other goals.

On Saturday, Forresters retained third place with a close 1-0 win over a vastly improved Motherwell Academy at Victoria Park.

Hearts continued to drop out of the league race when they drew 1-1 with Central Acemates at the Westbourne Oval.
