Bombers unable to stop Despatch runaway win

THE unstoppable Gap Despatch flattened African Bombers 55-27 in a thrilling EP Grand Challenge rugby game in Despatch at the weekend.

As in their previous meetings, the game was hotly contested as both sides came out with guns blazing.

Bombers, eager to avoid a second consecutive loss, started well and managed to keep the strong former Cell C Community Cup champions at bay in the opening stages.

The home side must have received a tongue lashing from their coaching staff during the interval as they came back far more clinical.

The Zwide outfit tried to resist the onslaught but Despatch proved too powerful and when they got into gear, they ran away with the game as the floodgates opened.

At Kemsley Park, the in-form PE SAPS thumped Progress 30-11.

The Port Elizabeth outfit have been in scintillating form, raking in the points, and the Uitenhage side became their latest victims.

The game started off well, with both sides testing one another. Police led 17-11 at the break.

After the interval, the police forwards dominated and helped their side to the victory. PE SAPS scored four tries to Progress's two.

Gardens edged Spring Rose 26-10 in Rosedale.

The home side went into the clash with momentum on their side and capitalised on the New Brighton side's lack of game time. Gardens led 14-3 after 40 minutes.

Whenever the two teams meet, it often boils down to which set of backs is more effective as they play the same running rugby style.

This time it was the Gardens players who rose to the occasion to claim the victory for their side.

One of this season's whipping boys, Harlequins, stunned the Brumbies 35-27 at the Adcock Stadium. The game started with Quins on the back foot as they have been throughout the campaign, with the Grahamstown side having a 22-15 lead at the break.

In the second half, Quins came to the party and ripped the Brumbies' defence apart.

Kruisfontein narrowly edged Caltex Crusaders at the Saders field. There were few chances created in the opening half as the defences from each side stood firm. Saders led 7-3 at half time.

In the second half, Kruisfontein proved hungry enough to take the winning points with a 28-23 result. - Mkhululi Ndamase
