Pefa log-leaders can retain advantage

THE title contenders for the Pefa premier soccer league title will clash this evening when log-leaders Callies host Warriors at Londt Park.

The teams have met twice this season. In their first-round league encounter, the Londt Park outfit thrashed Warriors 7-1 and followed that up with a 3-2 win in the League Cup. On current form they should retain the top spot.

At the NMMU south campus, NMMU Madibaz host tailenders PE Homerovers. In the first round, the students won 3-1, while last week they thrashed Homerovers 6-1 in the League Cup quarterfinals.

They should pick up maximum points this weekend to keep the pressure on Callies. The students are three points adrift, but have two matches in hand.

Forresters, who are the only other team with a sniff at the championship, play Motherwell Academy at Victoria Park.

Last week, Motherwell scored their biggest win of the season when they beat Hearts 6-1 in their own backyard. If they can reproduce that form, they could reverse the 4-1 defeat in the first round.

The rest of the teams, led by Highbury who are fourth, will be playing catch-up.

Highbury host KwaDwesi All Stars. With two matches in hand, Stars are one place away from the bottom of the log.

The fixtures are:

Tonight: Callies v Warriors (Londt Park), NMMU Warriors v PE Homerovers (NMMU South)

Tomorrow: PE Defence v NMB Municipality (EC Defence), Highbury v KwaDwesi All Stars (Bridgemead), Motherwell Academy v Forresters (Victoria Park), Central Acemates v Hearts (Westbourne Oval) - Mogan Segadavan
