Twelve people, arrested amid the violent clashes with police in Port Elizabeth last month, were released on bail yesterday.

Outraged Wells Estate residents angrily protested against their forced evictions in the early hours of June 21.

Appearing in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the nine men, aged between 27 and 43, and three women, aged between 20 and 31, were granted R500 bail each.

They had all been charged under the public violence act, criminal matters amendment act as well as the explosives act, police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said.

“Some of them were [allegedly] found in the possession of petrol bombs when they were arrested, ” he said.
