Winter weather closes Chapman's Peak Drive

The scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive and Toll Plaza in Cape Town have been closed‚ the province’s Department of Transport and Public Works announced today.

“Travelling through the drive has become dangerous due to high-risk weather conditions‚” the department said in a statement.

The closure of the route‚ popular with visitors for its dramatic mountain and sea views‚ is until further notice.

“The concessionaire managing the drive on behalf of the Western Cape Government‚ will be monitoring the situation‚” the department said. “The drive will be re-opened once deemed safe for motorists and other road users.”

Rock falls and mudslides have always been a hazard for motorists on the route‚ particular during storms in Winter. The road was closed earlier this month too. -RDM News Wire
