A FORMER David Livingstone Secondary School pupil is offering free driving lessons to pupils at the school in an effort to give back to his alma mater.

Irvin Peters, 48, is busy teaching 36 Grade 12 pupils to drive.

The lessons form part of an initiative by the school which asks former pupils to help their successors to succeed in life by offering opportunities not always at their disposal.

“As part of the alumni project, we require that they [give] back to the youth of the school,” teacher Ronel Smit said.

And the pupils are more than keen to take up the opportunity – one which lifts the financial burden many are placed under when trying to get a licence.

Matriculant Nyanyiso Mayinje, 21, said: “It would have taken me two years to save up for getting my licence . . . I am grateful because I would have not been able to do it.”

Kayla Camilio, 19, said: “I am really grateful for this opportunity – it is not often that we are given such opportunities.”

Asanda Bupsaka, 17, said she was really excited about the lessons. “I will have my licence soon, and I will one day be able to drive and buy a car.”

Peters, who matriculated at David Livingstone in 1984, has his own driving school and “decided to use my resources by giving the children lessons as my part of my duty as an alumnus”.

He said the lessons were going smoothly, with pupils easily grasping what they were taught.
