Court orders won’t stop attacks – Malema

THERE is no court of law that can stop the will of the people to remove statues.

This is according to EFF leader Julius Malema, who was responding to threats of a court challenge against his party over statues.

Afrikaner interest group Solidarity Movement said yesterday that it would today seek an interdict at the North Gauteng High Court against the EFF for incitement to remove and vandalise statues.

Solidarity deputy head Johan Kruger said there was a link between comments made by EFF leaders and the defacing of statues.

“Time and again, the EFF’s reckless incitement is followed by the defacing and vandalising of statues. Each time the EFF accepts responsibility knowing full well that it is a crime. This incitement by the EFF must be stopped,” Kruger said. Malema denied that the statues were being defaced at the party’s instruction.

“There is no court that can stop the will of the people. It is not us who are taking the statues down. It is the people. We are not going to waste our time opposing that thing,” he said.

Kruger, who claimed to be approaching the court “in the interests of the Afrikaner cultural community as well as in the interest of the public at large”, accused Malema and his party of dividing the nation.

The statue of Afrikaner leader Paul Kruger in Krugersdorp was defaced with red paint last week. This prompted AgangSA to vow to form a human chain to defend the statue, saying vandalising it was lawlessness.

Lobby group Afriforum, which also falls under the umbrella of Solidarity, has called for the swift arrest of those who deface statues.
