Pledge to end teacher shortage

Vacant posts in Bay to be filled by Monday, says MEC

NELSON Mandela Bay schools battling crippling teacher shortages have been given renewed hope, with Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula promising to fill as many of the vacant funded posts as possible by the end of the month.

Noting the dire shortage of teachers in rare and critical subjects, Makupula said yesterday that vacant posts that could be filled from the pool of surplus teachers would be filled by Monday.

A follow-up visit on the progress is planned for April 9.

The Port Elizabeth district has 279 teacher vacancies, with 204 in primary schools.

Makupula was speaking on the second day of the launch of the Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL) at the Helenvale Resource Centre.
