Ageing guards told to leave schools

A NUMBER of elderly security guards hired to protect pupils and teachers in Port Elizabeth's gangster-ridden nothern areas were asked to vacate three schools yesterday because of their age.

Principals, teachers, and parents from Hillcrest Primary School, Helenvale Primary and Gelvandale High expressed outrage yesterday about the guards meant to protect them.

They said the Eastern Cape Education Department had sent them inexperienced and old security guards who were not equipped with firearms.

A spate of gang violence from February to April had spilt over into the schools and principals, teachers and parents demanded better safety measures such as 24-hour guards, security cameras, panic buttons and decent fencing. - Alvené du Plessis
