Uitenhage children take to the streets

A SEA of grey and blue uniforms flooded Uitenhage's streets yesterday as more than 200 pupils from Limekhaya High School marched to deliver a letter to the Department of Education, accusing a teacher of physically and verbally abusing pupils.

Moments after school principal Lamile Faltein advised the reporter to leave because "it's just another day of normal school", members of the Young Communist League (YCL) led the pupils on their 2.5km march to the department from the Maduna Road school.

YCL member Xolani Matanzana said pupils and parents had repeatedly complained about a Grade 9 Xhosa teacher who verbally abused them and, at times, enforced corporal punishment in her class. - Tremaine van Aardt
