TB machine to boost fight against disease

IN a major breakthrough in the fight against tuberculosis in the Eastern Cape, the province yesterday received the first equipment that could give a diagnosis within two hours.

Patients have, until now, had to wait six weeks for results.

This places those who come into contact with an infected person at considerable risk of also being infected.

Health MEC Sicelo Gqobana yesterday morning officially handed over the state-of-the-art Gene-Xpert TB testing machine to the St Albans prison. - Estelle Ellis
