US students in Bay to tackle water issues
A GROUP of 43 students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – one of the world's top-ranked universities – are in the Bay this week to tackle Eastern Cape water issues with 25 students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
The students – respectively from MIT's Terrascope and NMMU's earth stewardship programmes, both of which take a multidisciplinary approach to solving real problems affecting the earth – will home in on township water hazards, focusing specifically on Missionvale township.
"Missionvale flanks an inland 'bowl' – a natural old salt pan – which is prone to flooding," Professor Maarten de Wit, who heads NMMU's earth stewardship science research Institute and was instrumental in organising MIT's visit, said. - Nicky Willemse
