1000 teachers due to get permanent jobs this week

MORE than 1000 qualified temporary teachers are due to start this week as permanent staff, but it will not be known until later today if the plan is on course.

The deadline for the Education Department to start converting the teachers' employment status was Friday, as per an agreement between unions and the government signed last month. But department spokesman Malibongwe Mtima could not say whether the department had indeed started the process on Friday.

He said the person overseeing the conversion had "been stuck in meetings" and unable to respond to his e-mails.
