SPEED DEMON: One of the images taken by a fixed speed camera in Port Elizabeth

DRIVING at break-neck speeds of up to 186km/h in suburban streets where the speed limit is 60km/h, Nelson Mandela Bay tow-truck drivers have been dodging the law for years, racking up hundreds of unpaid speeding fines.

Nelson Mandela traffic officials have spoken out in frustration that tow-truck drivers and the owners of the vehicles flagrantly flout speeding laws in pursuit of profit.

These shocking revelations have come to light just two weeks after it was reported in a council meeting that the traffic department collected only R1.8-million in revenue from fines between July and December last year, falling far short of its target by a whopping R14.3-million.

yes they do speed and force their way through traffic but at least they get to the scene sooner than any flashing red or blue lights. i was in a horrific accident a couple of months ago and to this day i’m very grateful for the help Jaco from Crash towing provided. in a situation where uniforms of all kinds were just standing around aimlessly. rather than keep them from making living why not force paramedic type training. see how much you mind the speeding when they save one of your family members. and look at the dramatic picture to sensationalise the story… 148 not 186km/h. 2 years ago, i guess no tow trucks have been speeding recently and at 5 in the morning. no children in the street that time of the morning. and if they are your problem is bigger than speeding cars. they dont race around, they rush to accident scene, whatever the motive they welcome to rush if i’m ever in an accident again

This is old news. It is because the Traffic Officials prefer to sit under a tree and trap people accelerating to get up a hill in a lower gear to save on fuel and their engines and also because they rather target the occasional “smaller, less dangerous” offences because normally law abiding citizens pay up. These people should also be charged with attempted murder for those speeds before someone gets killed. Their licences should be taken away and they should go to jail. The cars involved in the accident will still be there if they were called to it but they rather want to force unsuspecting people into making use ofr their services even if it means lying.
