Open manhole a danger to public

A GAPING open manhole in Biscay Road, outside the Pick n Pay receiving bay, could be responsible for a serious accident.

This according to Jarryd Moss, assistant manager at Pick n Pay, who warned the hole is a danger to both vehicles and pedestrians, and had been that way for over a year.

The cover of the manhole is missing and the concrete structure around the top of the hole has been damaged. Cars, delivery trucks, taxis and people use Biscay Street on a regular basis, thus increasing the chances of an accident occurring.

Moss pointed out the hole had been filling with litter. "When heavy rains come the water is not going to be able to drain,” he warned.

He said the municipality had been informed of the problem but had done nothing about it.

TotT contacted municipal spokesman Cecil Mbolekwa to inform him of the problem and to ask what the municipality was doing about it.

"We (the municipality) are going to round off the area with the red tape to protect the vehicles and people walking around the area,” Mbolekwa replied.

"Also, we are going to compact that manhole and clean it as it poses a danger to the public. Thanks for alerting us.”
