Man killed in gang-related shooting

WHILE some progress was made at weekend in the war against gang violence in Port Elizabeth, another man was shot dead in his Gelvandale home.

The 44-year old, whose name the police refused to release, died on his way to Livingstone Hospital on Friday night.

He was shot six times in the head, stomach, leg and thigh at his Buchu Street house at about 10pm.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the man was murdered by two unknown assailants.

The shooting is believed to be gang related.

Labans said earlier on Friday night police arrested two known gangsters in Cleary Estate, while they were driving in a white Golf down Stanford Road.

"Constables Severino Blunden and Ronald Erasmus from the Flying Squad were acting on information and pulled over the vehicle.

"They arrested the 32-year-old and 28-year-old suspects for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They found a 9mm pistol and ammunition in the car."

Last weekend, two men were killed and two wounded in separate incidents in Port Elizabeth's northern areas. - Cindy Preller
