Couple’s night of agony

AN elderly Jeffreys Bay couple spent the night trapped and alone on a mountainside near Addo after their car plunged 100m down an embankment in a nightmare end to their birthday celebrations.

Their horrifying ordeal ended 24 hours after the accident following a dramatic four-hour rescue, which entailed their rescuers abseiling down the steep slope to get to them.

Frans du Toit, 80, and his wife, Marie, 68, escaped relatively unscathed, bar some scratches and bruises suffered as they tried unsuccessfully to make their way up the Zuurberg mountain to the road.

They were taken to hospital in Port Elizabeth by helicopter.
