Festival marks PE club’s 135 years of tennis

THE PE Lawn Tennis Club will host a Festival of Tennis through the ages when it celebrates its 135th anniversary next Saturday. The club, based in Park Drive, is the oldest active tennis club in South Africa which is still using the same premises, stretching back to its beginning on September 1 1879.

The first lawn tennis club in South Africa was started in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, but that club has since disbanded, leaving PELTC with the distinction of being the oldest active club.

In fact, court number one is on the same piece of ground on which the club’s first ever court was built.
