Policeman back at work while on bail for theft

A POLICE constable released on bail last month after allegedly stealing a motorbike is back on the beat at Mount Road police station.

This while police management drag their feet over instituting disciplinary action against him.

Constable Bastian Peterson, 33, was released on R2000 bail after his lawyer, Ryno Scholtz, told the court his client's life was in danger at St Albans Prison.

Peterson was arrested at his Rowallan Park home on September 2 after allegedly being caught red-handed inside his house stripping down a stolen motorbike.

The Hawks investigated Peterson after a tip- off claiming he was involved in other crimes around Port Elizabeth as well.

Staff at Mount Road police station have criticised their bosses for not acting swiftly against Peterson and allowing him to return to work. - Gareth Wilson
