Cop, 33, accused of stealing police sign

A YOUNG Port Elizabeth policeman with a string of charges to answer to, found himself in the dock yesterday after he allegedly stole the signboard for the Mount Road police station.

Constable Bastian Peterson, 33, was granted R2 000 bail after the defence tore the state’s case apart.

Peterson, of Rowallan Park, has had several run-ins with the law. He faces additional charges of housebreaking, theft and fraud. He was arrested on September 2.

It is alleged he broke into a house in Walmer on August 17 and stole a TV, cellphone, money, CCTV cameras and jewellery.

In another incident in Central later last month, he allegedly stole a motorbike. When the owner spotted him stripping parts from the bike, Peterson told him that “the old man across the road” had given it to him.
