Concerns raised over Russian nuclear deal

SOUTH Africa’s much-hyped nuclear partnership agreement with Russia has been greeted with caution by analysts, activists, business and non-government organisations.

Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson announced a $50-billion (R557-billion) strategic partnership with Russia’s state-owned nuclear company, Rosatom, on Monday.

This lays the foundation for the development of eight nuclear power plants using Russian VVER reactors with total installed capacity of 9 600 megawatts.

Rosatom director-general Sergey Kirienko said the cooperation would be guided by providing the conditions for the creation of thousands of new jobs and placing a considerable order to South African industrial enterprises worth at least $10-billion (R111.4- billion).
