Insults hurled as Mkavu suspect appears

NELSON Mandela Bay ANC leaders, including the regional secretary, filled the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court yesterday when a suspect in the murder of councillor Buyisile Mkavu appeared for the first time.

Bongani Cagwe, 29, wearing a blue hoodie and jeans, appeared briefly before magistrate Gustav Joubert.

He kept the hood of his top over his head as he sat in the dock, only removing it when the judge walked in.

When court adjourned, he immediately pulled the hood back on his head and low over his face as he was escorted back to the court cells.

As Cagwe was led away some people seated in the front row, wearing ANC T-shirts or shirts with a picture of Mkavu printed on the front, hurled insults at him, but he did not react.

The case was postponed to Monday when a date for his formal bail application will be set - Riaan Marais
