SEVEN months after the management of the Uitenhage education district office was ordered to clean up its unhygienic toilets, the office is still filthy and littered with unused books, files and old office equipment.

In a notice from the municipality's public health directorate in November last year, a senior environmental health officer found the toilets to be so filthy that they posed a health and safety risk to staff and visitors to the building.

The department was given until February 3 to clean up its ablutions, but employees said their uncaring bosses had simply ignored the municipality's instruction. - Zandile Mbabela
