Gang shooting suspects in court

HEAVILY armed police officials packed the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court yesterday where two suspected gang members, allegedly behind a spate of shootings in New Brighton, made a brief appearance.

The state indicated that it would oppose bail for Xolani "Toto" Mzileni and Thoriso Yengi, both 30.

The men were arrested by a special provincial task team in Summerstrand at the weekend while allegedly driving in a hijacked vehicle.

The men face provisional charges of murder and attempted murder related to a spate of shootings, including the recent shooting at Chippa's Tavern in Nibe Street last month which left three dead and four seriously injured.

The court ruled that they would be kept in custody at St Albans Prison until July 1, when they will have an opportunity to make a formal bail application. – Kathryn Kimberley
