Motorist shot in hijacking attempt

A PORT Elizabeth man was shot and wounded during an attempted hijacking outside a house shop in Third Avenue, Hillside, on Wednesday night.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the man, whose name is being withheld, was confronted by three men as he left the shop shortly after 9pm.

"It appears that they wanted to hijack his white VW Polo. As he left the shop, the men confronted him and demanded his car keys," he said.

"The gunmen then shot him in the stomach but he managed to escape after jumping into his car and driving off." Labans said the men fired several more shots at the vehicle as the wounded man fled.

The man was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Labans said police did not believe the shooting was gang-related.
