Four face more cycad theft charges

THREE more charges will be added to those pending against four men who were arrested for allegedly attempting to steal and smuggle 25 endangered Eastern Cape blue cycads to Johannesburg.

The four suspects – Norman Maphari, 39, Joseph Mudyandarira, 30, Lucas Mbatha, 30, and an alleged juvenile who cannot be named – were arrested last week.

They appeared in the Kirkwood Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges relating to the Environmental Affairs Act involving threatened or protected species.

The case was postponed to allow investigators time to establish if the alleged juvenile is actually under 18. - Gareth Wilson
