'Gang boss' not called to testify in murder case

THE state yesterday decided not to call suspected gang leader Armien Potgieter to testify at the Port Elizabeth High Court trial of six men accused of murdering an elderly Theescombe couple in 2009.

Potgieter – who is out on bail and facing charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition himself – is alleged to be the leader of the Kakmakers gang but has denied any involvement in gang activities. He is accused of murdering Granton Nelson in a drive-by shooting on April 3 2010.

On May 29, a warrant of arrest was issued for Potgieter after he failed to arrive at court. On Friday, Potgieter arrived at court and was requested to return yesterday. - Lee-Anne Butler
