Firearms taken in house robbery

SEVEN firearms were stolen during a brazen house robbery at a Cherwell Street house in Linkside, Port Elizabeth, yesterday morning.

The weapons – including hunting rifles, shotguns and a revolver – were stolen by two gunmen who forced their way into the house after knocking on the door at about 10am.

Police spokesman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the homeowner, a 71-year-old man, and a domestic worker were in the house at the time.

Police declined to release the man's name.

"The two men knocked on the door and told the domestic worker that they wanted to talk to the homeowner. As the homeowner approached, they forced the front door open and held both of them at gunpoint," she said.

"The two gunmen then escorted them to the bedroom and tied them up before ransacking the house. The men then found the safe and demanded that they open it.

"I can confirm that they stole firearms and an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing in the homeowner's Mitsubishi Colt bakkie that was parked outside." The bakkie was recovered an hour later in Addo Road near Motherwell. – Gareth Wilson
