Gang terror keeps lips sealed

NELSON Mandela Bay tavern owners are so terrified of the bloody gang battles which have claimed lives in New Brighton that they refused to talk about the killings at a meeting with police yesterday.

But police were adamant that law-abiding residents should not live in fear and allow themselves to be ruled by criminals.

The tavern owners from New Brighton, Zwide, Kwazakhele, KwaDwesi and Motherwell were called by the police to a special meeting at the Nangoza Jebe Hall to help find solutions to the gang war which has gripped New Brighton for weeks.

A number of those present, who had been chosen to speak, refused to engage with the police on the matter out of fear for their lives. - Thulani Gqirana
