Schools battle without first aid kits

A DISTURBING shortage of first aid equipment in Port Elizabeth schools has been highlighted by a teacher, who has to use plastic bags over her hands when treating a bleeding child because there are no surgical gloves available.

A recent audit of schools in the city by the Red Cross has exposed a dire shortage of properly stocked first aid kits on school premises, with some having no kits at all.

"In one school, a teacher told us she had to cover her hands with plastic bags if she attended to a bleeding child because they did not have surgical gloves," Red Cross Port Elizabeth branch manager Coralie Peo-Swartz said. - Estelle Ellis
