WITH construction of the studio set to begin this month, Kouga FM has high hopes of being on air in December.

The planned radio station will make history by being the first radio station in the Kouga region. The community radio station has been in the pipeline for more than six years.

Over the years it has faced challenges like getting a licence and funding.

Station manager Marvin Terblanche said they had renewed hopes of getting the radio station off the ground now that it was being backed by the media development and diversity agency.

"Construction of our studio is set to begin this month. It is going to take two months to complete, including the installation of all the equipment. We are all highly motivated and confident that we are going to be ready by our launch deadline,” he said.

The station line-up will include current affairs, educational, cultural and religious programmes.
It will also play a variety of music.

The station will be housed inside the Kouga Cultural Centre in Humansdorp.
According to licencing regulations, the station has to broadcast in three languages, Afrikaans 75%, English 8‘% and Xhosa17%.
