Familiar turf for festival artist

AN EASTERN Cape-born and bred jazz artist will this year be gracing National Arts Festival stages in Grahamstown for the first time since she matriculated there.

Jazz singer Nomfundo Xaluva, from Port Elizabeth but a former headgirl of Victoria Girls' High, returns to her old school town to take to the Standard Bank Jazz Festival stage as a top act.

Her debut album, Kusile, scored the singer-songwriter this year's Metro FM Music Award for Best Urban Album.

Xaluva graduated with a distinction in her masters degree in jazz vocal studies at the University of Cape Town.

She has performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and in 2011 she opened a concert for jazz legend Dianne Reeves. – Michelle Solomon
