MEC Buyelwa Tunyiswa to unveil ‘major plans’ for Bayworld revamp

Sport and recreation MEC Buyelwa Tunyiswa will unveil “major plans” for revamping Nelson Mandela Bay’s dilapidated Bayworld when she tables her policy statement.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session with the media ahead of the state of the province address in Bhisho on Friday, Tunyiswa said the newly inducted board had also drawn up a new business plan.
The move could finally forge the way forward for the longawaited revamp of Bayworld.
“We were expected to fundraise R148m so that the infrastructure at Bayworld can come back to its original state.
“We are happy to announce that the new board that has been inducted has a major plan in place,” Tunyiswa said.
She said further details would be communicated in her portfolio committee’s policy speech, likely to take place within the next few weeks.
Speaking on the closure of Red Location Museum for the past six years, Tunyiswa said the province had a memorandum of understanding with the city but it was ultimately up to the metro to act swiftly.
Red Location Museum has been closed due to a standoff between residents and the municipality.
Some residents of Block 40 were demanding that their houses be rectified, as opposed to the city relocating them to suitable serviced sites.
More recently a group of residents asked that the municipality instead build houses with the money that had been set aside for installing services.
Tunyiswa emphasised the need to strengthen intergovernmental relations between the city and the province.
She said the department was working on strengthening relations with the metro in this regard.
