Heist accused ducks and dives


A man accused of a daring jewellery store heist and the murder of an innocent man in a botched hijacking vehemently denied any involvement in the crime and refused to admit a figure appearing in CCTV footage of the robbery shown in court was him.
Adamant he had never set foot in Fischer’s jewellery store at Greenacres, Lindokuhle January, 21, often changed his evidence during cross-examination by prosecutor Zelda Swanepoel.
When Swanepoel put it to January that he was lying, he said: “I would never do that, I took an oath not to lie.”
Swanepoel presented him with images of the footage taken at Fischer's where a man is seen wielding a gun and trying to smash the display window.
"The person on the screen is you,” Swanepoel said.
January denied this.
He was arrested in July 2016.
With Olwethu Dlanga, 21, Awonke Yako, 20 and Lonwabo Maweni, 42, he is charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
