Campaign backfires

Mabena fans up in arms after ‘accident’ video proves hoax

Rapper and television presenter Nomuzi Mabena is alive and well.
This is after she had fans in a frenzy after she posted a video on social media which purportedly recorded her being involved in a horrific car crash.
It turns out it was all a publicity stunt used in a campaign against drunk driving.
Mabena posted a live Instagram video late on Thursday evening which looked like it was being filmed while the TV star was holding her phone and driving at the same time.
In the clip Mabena said she had a “big announcement” to make.
But the supposed announcement was cut short when a screeching noise was heard and a cracked windscreen came into view – sending shockwaves across social media platforms.

Messages of concern immediately began flooding in and continued well into Friday afternoon – until the cat was let out of the bag. It was a hoax.
Mabena took to Twitter, more than 12 hours after the video went viral to announce it was part of a campaign in partnership with Volkswagen and Drive Dry, a drunk-driving awareness initiative.
“I partnered with Volkswagen and Drive Dry to make a change in 2019,” she wrote on her Twitter page.
“We don’t want to see another year where thousands of lives are lost on our roads because of drinking and driving.
“Take the pledge and make a change in 2019.”
The revelation sparked outrage, however, with fans hitting back at Mabena. “[The] audacity to call that a campaign, instead of a silly stunt,” Wendy Tlou said.
“The message is completely lost because your ill-thought gimmick had us worried about someone’s life. Did you educate, change perception, create meaningful awareness? No. Get professionals to do your PR and stop this mess,” Tlou said.
Another user said: “There are many ways of educating the nation – some of us were left shaken and worried.”
Siyabonga Khumalo also took to his Twitter account.
“I’m just glad Nomuzi is alive because you were going to start lying saying her music was dope,” he said.
Twitter user Cleme Cleme said he had smelt a rat when Mabena first posted the video.
“Very theatrical crashing sound and awkward silence,” he said on the social media platform. “In a normal accident, there would be more noise, screaming, skidding, screeching and tumbling of things – including the phone.”
Volkswagen spokesperson Andile Dlamini said the campaign’s aim was to urge people to celebrate life responsibly in 2019.
“The crash and all subsequent posts leading up to it were staged in order to drive a powerful message home,” he said in a statement.
“With another December of devastating road fatalities, many caused by drinking and driving, Volkswagen and Drive Dry wanted to create an impactful campaign that will make South Africans wake up to the realities of the behaviours that are condoned on social media.
“The campaign aims to inspire drivers to make a behavioural change and think twice before drinking and driving,” the statement said.
“The campaign also hopes to encourage friends and family to speak out against their loved ones when they identify signs of drinking and driving.”..
