Port Elizabeth swimmers in fine form at artistic championships

Nelson Mandela Bay swimmers came out tops at the 2018 National Age Group Artistic Championships in Pretoria, returning with seven gold medals, eight silvers and one bronze.
The event, hosted by the Kingfisher Club, took place from December 13 to 17.
The competition incorporated trials for the Fina Senior World Champs and the Fina 13-15 age group competition.
Clubs from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria competed.
Eight swimmers from the Bay participated and achieved excellent results, while the Aquabear Club came third.
Of the Port Elizabeth swimmers, Courtney Musson – competing in the open division – was the biggest winner.
Musson won gold in the figures event and silver in the free and technical solo events.
She then teamed up with Nina Smith to end second in the open technical duet.
Competing in the junior (15 to18 years) category, Smith took gold in the technical solo and bronze in the free solo.
In the open technical and free team events, Eastern Cape took two silver medals, behind Western Cape and ahead of KwaZulu-Natal.
Kirsten Swanevelder and Liyema Prince achieved good placings in the figures and solo events in the 13 to 15 group.
Prince was in the top 10 and Swanevelder finished in the top 20 in her first year in the age group.
In the 12 and under category Rachel Taylor achieved a triple of gold in figures, solo and duet. Her duet partner Jasmine Witthuhn won silver in figures and solo.
Anisia Kerdei and Aneesah Lindoor competed in the 12 and under novice category. Kerdei won gold in the figures and together they won the gold in the duet.
All eight athletes also participated in the open combination team event, where the team finished second.
At the end of the tournament the selectors announced two SA squads for the Fina world champs and the Fina age groups championships.
Musson and Smith are in the open squad, and Swanevelder, Taylor and Witthuhn are all in the age group squad.
