Cyclist, woman in fatal accidents

A cyclist was knocked down and killed by a one-ton truck outside St Francis Bay on Friday morning.
Mere hours after the crash, a woman was hit by a car and killed while crossing a road in Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the first accident was believed to have killed the 67-year-old cyclist on the R330 at about 6.30am.
“It is believed a truck was travelling towards St Francis Bay and a cyclist in the opposite direction.
“It is alleged that the cyclist made a sudden U-turn in front of the truck, which is when he was struck,” Nkohli said.
After the accident, the truck driver stopped and alerted authorities.
Nkohli said due to the nature of the accident, the man’s identity could not be confirmed at this stage.
“At this stage we are waiting for the family to do a formal identification at the state mortuary,” he said.
In the Port Elizabeth accident, a 53-year-old woman was knocked down and killed at about 10am in Godetia Drive, Malabar, while running across the road.
The name of the woman is being withheld until her next of kin have been informed.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the woman had been walking on the pavement with six other people when the incident occurred.
“They were walking back from the Lorraine area where they had collected food parcels.
“According to witnesses, a man stopped on the opposite side of the road and offered them a lift,” he said.
“In an attempt to get to the car, the group ran across the road and an oncoming BMW struck the woman.”
Labans said she had died on the scene.
