PE twins in TV's 'Ultimate Braai Master'

Holy Smokes sisters Kathy and Audrey want to win cooking show title

Another Port Elizabeth pair is set to do fiery battle against fiercely competitive teams in the upcoming season of the hit SA reality television show, The Ultimate Braai Master.
The new season will follow teams on a six-week road trip through SA and neighbouring countries. They will have to braai their way through numerous challenges – and survive elimination rounds – in a bid to claim a car, R500,000 and the title of Ultimate Braai Master.
Kathy Bouton and Audrey Atherstone, 56, twins from a smallholding at Westlands, between Colleen Glen and Greenbushes, said they were well prepared for season six’s competition as they had learnt a lot from season five.
The teams they will be up against will include another pair from Port Elizabeth, husband-and-wife Keith and Lee and Page from Lorraine.
Lee, 35, and Keith, 37, will go by the name of All Fired Up, while Kathy and Audrey are Team Holy Smokes.
The Lees tried out as contestants four times before finally making the grade for next year’s show. The sisters, too, had tried their luck previously.
“We entered last year for season five and made it until the final cut. Having now watched season five we’re quite pleased as we think this year there will be more teams and locations,” Atherstone said. “For sure it’s going to be an adventure of a lifetime.”
Bouton has a guesthouse and Atherstone manages a pet boarding establishment at their smallholding. The two said they decided to enter again because they loved travelling and the concept of the show.
The Ultimate Braai Master has been running since 2011, and was the brainchild of SA filmmaker, chef and television personality Justin Bonello, creative director of Cooked in Africa Films.
“We aim to win because we feel it’s about time two ‘older’ women win – and about time the title comes to PE,” Atherstone said. “We feel mentally and physically prepared and are looking forward to the challenge.”
Cooked in Africa social media manager Bela Pechau said would-be contestants had to enter online and answer a series of food-related questions, as well as put together a menu.
Port Elizabeth was last represented on the show in 2014, in the form of the Fire Feeders – Bay artist Bretten-Anne “BA” Moolman and fisherman Stuart “Smiler” Smith.
The Fire Feeders were among the last five teams left on the show before they were eliminated.
The 2018 season finished screening in April and was won by team Salty Flames, made up of Chanel Marais and Nick Perfect.
Filming of the new series of starts mid-September and will be broadcast on e.tv from February 2019.
